In early 2021, while living in Takoma Park, MD, I was given the honor of designing the Sip’n’Soul Tea Box for My Cup of Tea, a non-profit organization based in my hometown of Memphis, TN, and more specifically, the Orange Mound neighborhood where I grew up. After hearing about being awarded the commission, I got busy right away and the ideas and paint began to fly. There was only one problem, the composition was too busy for the small box. I quickly took elements of the original design and submitted it at the pleasure of the client. This left me with “Born by the River (Sound of the Mississippi)” a painting that spoke volumes to me personally. I went back into the original composition and redeveloped some aspects. The changes came easy to me due to something that was awakened in me. I had been spoken to on another vibration. My wife Sadiyya had suggested that I enter my hat into the search for designing the tea box in the first place. Additionally, when we traveled to Memphis to help unveil and launch the new tea and box design, we both heard and felt the call of HOME. Not only had this project allowed us to reevaluate our plans for the future, it had given us an opportunity to be reintroduced back into our beloved Memphis Community with a BANG. Born by the River (Sounds of the Mississippi) was now solidly the foundation of a journey that I began in search of one of music’ most influential figure, Robert Johnson. The original is not available, HOWEVER, Large Scaled, Artist Enhanced, Fine Art, Canvas Prints, at 36” x 48” are available at $1500.
